EKHUFT Barbara Mushett Award Winners – Kings D Award Team from William Harvey Hospital

During May and June, East Kent Hospitals asked for people to share good examples of care delievered at one of our Hospitals.

The award – originally presented in 2014 at the Community of Practice Conference – was created to remember Barbara who was referred to in Death by Indifference with her sister Jean Anthony. We are pleased to share that this year the judging panel -consisting of Jean, Helen O’Keefe – Associate Chief Nurse, and Paula Theobald – 2014 winner – were impressed with the quality and quantity of the nominations.

In the end the Kings D staff team won the award for an excellent example of using the tools and frameworks available on the EKHUFT website and going that extra mile to reflect on improvements for the future.

East Kent Outpatients Consultation – Easy Read

East Kent Hospitals and Canterbury and Coastal Clinical Commissioning Group have just begun a consultation on the future of Outpatients services in East Kent.

The consultation is eager to hear the opinions of people with learning disabilities, and as such an easy to read document and survey are available, and there are consultation events set up for people to find out more and have their opinion heard.

Kent and Medway Learning Disability Community of Practice Purpose

After an extended period of consultation reflection and some changes, we are pleased to share the final versions of the Purpose of this Community of Practice.

The first four actions identified as priorities by the group that met in May 2013 are:-

1) Help people with learning disabilities to know what to expect
2) Raise awareness with front line staff
3) Think about how we will know the Community is working well
4) Influencing people, organisations and governments.

So far we are pleased to have 91 people or organisations following this blog, many of whom are supporting and caring for people on a daily basis. We are also pleased to have been sharing opportunities for people with learning disabilities and frontline staff to get involved with.

We have been approached by care staff and family carers to help them identify how to know what to expect, and what is expected of them when they are admitted to hospital. We are going to be looking for people to help with a project like this. Do you know anyone that might want to help?
