People with learning disabilities facing long waits for care reviews

In a report published today the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee finds “just 39% of learning disability inpatients received care and treatment reviews within six months”:  http://bit.ly/2pkK27R
“We are also concerned that support for people with a learning disability who live in the community is patchy; there are significant local variations but, on average, fewer than 6% of people with a learning disability are in employment and only 23% of people with a learning disability are registered as such with their GPs. There needs to be a greater focus on measuring outcomes and improvements to the quality of life from the £8 billion central and local government spend each year on this support.”

Building Our Community: The Kent, Surrey & Sussex Learning Disability Community of Practice 2017 Conference, Thursday 15 June, The Charis Centre, Crawley, Surrey 

The Community of Practice is looking for local people from across Kent, Surrey and Sussex to present local good practice initiatives and to share their work at the Conference in a workshop, on a market stall or by producing a poster.

The closing date for applications to run workshops, market stalls or produce posters is 19 May 2017. Applications should focus on the three purposes of the Community of Practice which are to:

1.    Be person centred

8 June – don’t lose your right to vote!

The problem is that many people with learning disabilities are not registered to vote. They may get turned away from the polling station if they don’t register by Monday 22nd May.

Patient and public participation in commissioning health and care: Statutory guidance for clinical commissioning groups and NHS England

This guidance is for clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and NHS England. It supports staff to involve patients and the public in their work in a meaningful way to improve services, including giving clear advice on the legal duty to involve.

The guidance links to an extensive range of resources, good practice and advice that will support staff to involve patients and the public. It highlights key participation principles, alongside themes such as working in partnership with others, including with ‘seldom heard’ groups to maximise the benefits and impact of involvement.

This guidance sets out 10 key actions for CCGs and NHS England on how to embed involvement in their work.
