Dear KSS LD Community of Practice

I am really please to announce to you all that the British Institute of Learning Disabilities have agreed to take on the challenge of supporting the Community of Practice to become more sustainable. They will be making contact with you all soon to tell you more but I just wanted to take this opportunity to make you aware that we will be handing over the day to day management of the KSS LD CoP to BILD over the next few weeks who have agreed to run it for us for the next 12 months.

With all this change taking place I wanted to start with welcoming Tom Evans from BILD who has agreed to become our dedicated project manager over the next 12 months. Tom has very kindly provided us with a copy of his biography please have a look and join with me in welcoming BILD and Tom in supporting us to further develop the KSS LD CoP.

How social care providers can support the health needs of people with learning disabilities

by National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi)

The Public Health England Learning Disabilities Observatory (IHaL) is running a free event in Cambridge aimed at family members and professionals who provide care and support for people with learning disabilities. This event will include information about the Health Charter for Social Care Providers. There will be practical guidance on how social care providers and staff can have an important role in helping people access good healthcare and lead a healthy lifestyle.

CAN YOU HELP: East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust

Medical Education in East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust are trying to provide doctors and other health professionals with a one hour lunch time teaching session on Deprivation of Liberty and Safe Guarding and the Mental Capacity Act.

These will take place across the three main acute sites, Margate, Canterbury and William Harvey .

For this to take place we require a legal professional or lawyer who currently practices in this topic area to speak and facilitate the session.

Medical Education would like the sessions to involve a 30/40 minute talk from the speaker followed by a Q&A with the remaining time. Does anyone know of a good legal expert in this field?

Speaker fees are payable.

Life Stories in East Kent

More than 20 people with learning disabilities and their supporters came to learn about recording their life stories at Canterbury Christ Church Uni’s Broadstairs Campus on a wonderfully sunny day in March. The workshop was led by Jan Walmsley and Sue Ledger, members of the Open University’s Social History of Learning Disabilities Research Group

Domestic violence and women with learning disabilities

In this research project we wanted to hear directly from women with learning disabilities themselves about the domestic violence they had experienced. (We also explored the views, attitudes and responses of the Police and health and social care professionals and these will be reported elsewhere).
