BILD statement on death of Richard Handley

Statement from BILD Health Advisor Jim Blair following the inquest into the death of Richard Handley:

Richard’s avoidable death like all such deaths is very disturbing and action must be taken to stop these happening again. Every day, three people with a learning disability die avoidably in England. There should be no more.

At its worst, catatonia in autism can lead to immobility, dependence for all daily living and become life-threatening. Studies suggest between 12-18% of autistic people may show varying levels of catatonia. Darren Devine reports.

Steve Broach blog: Mendip House – not ‘safeguarding’ failures but rights violations

I struggle to see how the kind of treatment of the residents at Mendip House described in the Safeguarding Adults Review** can be anything other than inhuman and degrading – and thereby prohibited by Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
